Artist Statement

I am an expressive painter inspired by my love of the outdoors, mainly the southwest. I am always intrigued by the colors in rock formations, especially during the sunset. I observe, on location, and finish the work in my studio. These paintings of nature are more than just a visual record, they are to convey the overall experience of the location – valleys, flatlands, skies, and rock formations. It is my intention to welcome the viewer into a portrait of nature, perhaps allowing them to feel as if they have visited the space themselves.

I work in pastels. In my artwork, I do not smudge the pastels. Instead, I bring contrast by using a combination of broad and detailed strokes and at times, a wash of shapes. Light and color are the most important aspects of my work. The light, setting, and my experience of the location drive the creation.

I am most inspired by Annie Helmericks-Louder, who was one of my college art professors. The color in my artwork is inspired by Wayne Thiebaud. Aspects of cubism inspire shapes.
